Happy Birthday Jane! You have been such an important person in my life. I am happy to have known you for 25 of your 70 years!
Turning 70 means two things. You survived the 60's and you survived your 60’s. Happy Happy Birthday!

Hi Jane,
I want to wish the happiest of birthdays. I really appreciated all your hard work setting up the Mediation Program at Brookline High School and guiding me through many of those troubled waters that a high school administrator faces. You made a significant difference to many students in the Brookline School system.
You are a person of grace and intelligence and one who I respected and enjoyed every time you came into my office. Thank you for sharing your skills with me and making me a better person and administrator. You certainly made me look at conflicts and resolve them in a better way. Thank you and please have a Happy Happy 70th Birthday!
I am so jealous of you being on that wonderful Caribbean Island!
Sincerely,
Jim Smith

JANE IS TURNING 70!!
The Blueprint yearbook of 1961 said Jane Woodbury...."just stepped out of Vogue". Things haven't changed with the Birthday Girl.....you are still stylish, even more so as the big 7-0 approaches.
My friend Jane (since Sept of 1955, when we entered 7th grade), you are gracious and kind and "Politically Astute"(I say that because we frequently agree, and are often in the minority in our BHS group of friends ).
Madeline and Warren would be proud of their little girl......what you learned at 10 Frost Rd is still very much who you are.....perhaps a bit more sophisticated and worldly, as you and Steve travel the globe, but still the Golden Rule......you always treat others as you would want to be treated by others.
As I send my wishes for a wonderful celebration, full of and and , I say "WELCOME TO THE CLUB" !! It's not so bad being 70, and you are celebrating in sun and warmth.....lucky you!!
And lucky me for having a friend like you for close to 60 years (Yikes!) Perhaps you've noticed, 1. I love my emoticons, and 2. I'm not very adept at inserting photos, but I thought Mrs. Belafonte would want to be part of your birthday wishes......she turns 71 two days before you turn 70....you are just a babe, Jane.
With much love to you and congrats to the Lorch kids for gathering the wishes together,
Nancy

JUST BECAUSE…
We met about 35 years ago (give or take) when our ‘boys’ were in Vivian Cohen’s 3rd grade together (remember the ‘packets’?)…OMG!....and now these wonderful ‘boys’ are dads themselves…..amazing….
We have taken many walks together --- around the Route 9 reservoir when Alex was an infant, and beyond, including the wonderful and awful 3 Day Breast Cancer Walk in 2001 in memory of and in honor of our wonderful friend Allene (remember my noisy air mattress? hmmmm); I’m sort of (but not completely) sorry I have no photos of us at the end of that adventure, but posterity probably benefits……And we were Great! And raised a lot of money in Allene’s memory……….
You have been at my side in many challenging situations (including cemetery shopping, which had suddenly became a terrible necessity, as well as shopping for special occasion dresses, even in Salem!), and your strength, humor and tolerance have always carried me forward; thank you.
We like to eat --- many sushi dinners (usually at the same place, since we lose each other if we try to vary the routine) before our book club meetings or otherwise…..
AND….
then there are the cafeteria breakfasts at the Timilty School in Roxbury each June, where we meet our middle school pen-pals and have to attempt conversations with them (or with each other, which is so much easier!).
And sharing our Chilmark and Little Compton lives and dreams with each other…….And, of course, sharing stories of our beautiful children……
(I wish I could remember more clearly the multitude of other laughs and cries and conversations and events – suffice it to say, I hope we keep creating them……..P
NEVER….
…have I had a friend like you, and I am eternally grateful that you are in my life; you add such joy!
ETERNAL…..
BFFs????.......you bet……con amore a te, cara jane……..e buon compleanno – it is only a number (ok, it’s a large one, and so much larger than mine, thankfully, as it always will be!)……
LOVE,

Dan and Linda Farrell:
Hi, Jane! Happiest of birthdays to you, on this very important one. We've chosen Cavafy's poem "Ithaca," as our small way of honoring you. It is one of our favorite poems. As you may know, Ithaca was Odysseus' (Ulysses') home, and Homer's *Iliad* is of course the story of his journey back home after the Trojan War. Though the person spoken to in Cavafy's poem is a man, it was easy for us to think of you as we reread it recently, because of your love of travel and adventure. May your travels continue for many years to come!
Love,
Dan & Linda
Ithaka
by Constantine P. Cavafy
As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:
you’ll never find things like that on your way
as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,
as long as a rare excitement
stirs your spirit and your body.
Laistrygonians and Cyclops,
wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them
unless you bring them along inside your soul,
unless your soul sets them up in front of you.
Hope the voyage is a long one.
May there be many a summer morning when,
with what pleasure, what joy,
you come into harbors seen for the first time;
may you stop at Phoenician trading stations
to buy fine things,
mother of pearl and coral, amber and ebony,
sensual perfume of every kind--
as many sensual perfumes as you can;
and may you visit many Egyptian cities
to gather stores of knowledge from their scholars.
Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you are destined for.
But do not hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you are old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you have gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.
Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you would not have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.
And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,
you will have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

Dear Jane,
For more than forty years I have seen your family grow and develop successfully and this is surely your reward for your concentration on stability and sensible planning. Not withstanding all of the challenges you have met, you keep a light heart, good humor , and an infectiously social manner.
Here's to many happy returns of your birthday.
With love ,
John Nelson

Bob Weintraub:
Jane Lorch represents the golden age of Brookline High, when we were free to innovate without the constraints of today's often cold and intrusive policies from beyond the school. We were able to do our our best thinking about what was best for the kids, and then develop strategies and programs that emerged from this thinking. Jane's Mediation program was one of those innovations. Jane and her colleagues first taught students the knowledge and skills that enabled them to understand and resolve the inevitable disputes that emerge in a community of adolescents. Then she empowered the mediators to translate "theory" into "practice" through actual mediations between students at BHS. Mediation demonstrated a tremendous faith in the goodness of our students -- both the mediators and the mediated -- and their ownership of and deep investment in their school. It served as a very effective peace-making strategy for our school community, complementing and often substituting for our more traditional system of discipline. Mediation at Brookline High was one of the programs that led me to adopt John Gardner's mantra, "Freedom and Responsibility; Liberty and Duty; That's the Deal." Mediation at Brookline High was one of the many ways Jane Lorch demonstrated her exemplary citizenship and leadership in our school community. Jane Lorch represents the best of Brookline. Happy Birthday, Jane!

The Little Old Lady Guy:
Dear Jane,
I recently moved my garbage cans out from behind your old driveway spot (where you park your Volvo) at 1 Clinton Path, and as I was doing so my scruffy dog, Pu-Pu, discovered some of your mail from the IRS. I didn't want to read it, but I needed to find out your new address so I could send it to you. Within the pages of all of your credit information dating back to 1971 when you lived on Mt. Vernon Street, I discovered that your birthday is February 6th and that this is quite a big, round number. What an accomplishment!
So, I'll be sending the paperwork on to your new address at Patten Drive in Little Compton, Rhode Island, but before I do I wanted to wish you a very happy birthday. Pu-Pu and I did enjoy being your neighbors for all those years.
Happy Birthday!

Feliciano Petruzziello:
Dear Jane,
Happy Birthday and thank you for your years of patronage at Pino's Pizzeria. I know that you usually sent your beautiful children in to our establishment to pick up pizza and a steak and cheese with mayo, mustard, lettuce, pickles and tomatoes but we know who was footing the bill. You are a wonderful family and we always enjoyed knowing that you were our Cleveland Circle neighbors.
I hope one day you'll come in to say hello to all us "old guys" at Pinos.
Ciao Bella!
